Image-guided minimally invasive procedures · 10,000+ procedures/year · Zero extra fees

Our Department

The Department of Interventional Radiology at Cochin Hospital combines significant clinical activity, research and teaching. Our team performs over 10,000 procedures per year, with no extra fees beyond the standard French health insurance rates.

Our facilities include a dedicated procedure suite with angiography rooms, an interventional CT scanner with a robotic C-arm, and high-end ultrasound systems with MRI/CT/cone-beam CT fusion imaging.

The department is organised around three expert units:

  • Abdominal, Vascular & Women's Health Unit: embolization (pelvic varices, prostate, fibroids, varicocele), hepatic oncology, venous access
  • Musculoskeletal, Tumour & Pain Management Unit: tumour ablation (sarcomas, desmoid tumours, knee osteoarthritis), cementoplasty, percutaneous fixation, neurolysis, bone and soft tissue sarcoma reference centre, desmoid tumour reference centre
  • Thoracic & Oncology Unit: pulmonary tumour ablation, thoracic oncology
Patient comfort: medical hypnosis (performed by trained radiographers) and virtual reality (HypnoVR) are available during procedures to reduce anxiety. We are committed to environmentally responsible practice.

Frequently asked questions

It is a medical specialty that treats a wide range of conditions using minimally invasive, image-guided techniques — through a simple skin puncture rather than open surgery, usually under local anaesthesia and as a day case.
A broad range: women's health (fibroids, endometriosis, pelvic varices), men's health (prostate, varicocele, erectile dysfunction), interventional oncology (liver, kidney, lung tumours), musculoskeletal pain (knee osteoarthritis, tennis elbow) and haemorrhoids, among others. See our full directory below.
No referral is mandatory. A letter from your doctor is helpful to share your medical background, but you can contact our secretariat directly: ri.cch@aphp.fr, +33 1 58 41 46 12.
No vehicles can enter the hospital grounds. Parking is only available in nearby public paid car parks (not hospital-run) — for example 83 boulevard Saint-Jacques or the Soufflot-Panthéon car park, 22 rue Soufflot (open 24/7, about 15 minutes' walk, near RER B Luxembourg). Street parking is paid Monday to Saturday, 9am-8pm (free on Sundays and public holidays). We recommend public transport: metro line 6, Saint-Jacques station, or RER B, Port-Royal station. If you live far from Paris, feel free to ask us about a teleconsultation.
Interventional radiology consultations are mainly held in the Achard building, 1st basement level, ultrasound area, close to entrance 8, rue Méchain. Musculoskeletal radiology consultations are held in the Albarran building, 1st basement level, near the main entrance at 27 rue du Faubourg Saint-Jacques, 75014 Paris.
Yes. All our procedures are covered by French national health insurance (Assurance Maladie). Materials used during procedures — including costly items such as cryoablation needles — are never billed separately. Out-of-pocket costs are always kept as low as possible. International patients not covered by French health insurance can request a cost estimate.
The vast majority of procedures are performed under local anaesthesia. You may feel mild pressure but not significant pain. Light sedation is available for longer or more anxious cases. We also offer medical hypnosis and virtual reality (HypnoVR) to improve your comfort.
Yes. We regularly treat patients from across France and abroad, particularly for our reference specialties: parietal endometriosis cryoablation, desmoid tumours, knee osteoarthritis, and thyroid radiofrequency ablation. Please email your imaging and referral letter to ri.cch@aphp.fr — we will arrange consultation and procedure on consecutive days where possible.
