Prostate Cancer - Paris

Diagnosis and treatment by the Cochin urology department. Not to be confused with benign adenoma (BPH)

Quick answer

The diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer are the responsibility of the urology department. The Interventional Radiology Department provides support: image-guided prostate biopsy to confirm the diagnosis, in conjunction with prostate MRI, and management of certain complications (bone metastases, venous access).

Not to be confused: prostate cancer and prostate adenoma

Prostate cancer and prostate adenoma (benign prostatic hyperplasia, BPH) are two different diseases. The adenoma is a non-cancerous enlargement, responsible for urinary symptoms, which we treat by prostatic artery embolization. Prostate cancer is a malignant tumour whose diagnosis and treatment are the responsibility of the urology department.

The role of interventional radiology

The diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer (biopsy, surgery, active surveillance, complementary treatments) are the responsibility of the urology department. Our Interventional Radiology department supports the care pathway:

  • Image-guided prostate biopsy, in conjunction with prostate MRI, to confirm the diagnosis
  • Management of distant bone metastases (cementoplasty, vertebroplasty) in advanced disease
  • Venous access for hormone therapy or prolonged chemotherapy
