Quick answer

A symptomatic thyroid nodule can cause neck discomfort, compression or a cosmetic impact. Recognising these symptoms makes it possible to know when to seek consultation and whether treatment (radiofrequency for benign nodules) should be considered.

Which symptoms indicate that a thyroid nodule should be treated?

Most thyroid nodules are asymptomatic and only require surveillance. However, some nodules become symptomatic as they grow: difficulty swallowing (dysphagia), a sensation of a lump in the throat, voice changes, breathing difficulty, or a cosmetic impact (visible swelling of the neck).

Toxic nodules (hyperfunctioning) can cause hyperthyroidism: palpitations, weight loss, nervousness, excessive sweating, heat intolerance. Percutaneous radiofrequency is indicated for symptomatic benign nodules, with a volume reduction of 50 to 80% without surgery or scar, as a day case at Cochin AP-HP hospital.

Frequently asked questions

Is a thyroid nodule necessarily cancerous?
No. More than 95% of thyroid nodules are benign. The risk of malignancy is assessed by ultrasound (EU-TIRADS classification) and fine-needle aspiration. Only suspicious nodules (EU-TIRADS 4-5) require a biopsy.
From what size should a thyroid nodule be treated?
There is no absolute size threshold. Treatment is indicated when the nodule is symptomatic (discomfort, compression, hyperthyroidism) and benign (negative fine-needle aspiration). Radiofrequency is effective on nodules of 1 to 6 cm.
Does radiofrequency remove the whole thyroid?
No. Radiofrequency destroys only the nodule, preserving the healthy thyroid parenchyma and thyroid function. This is one of its major advantages over surgery.
Is a medical letter required?
