Heavy periods and fibroids

Understanding the link between menorrhagia and fibroids

Quick answer

Very heavy periods (menorrhagia) lasting more than 7 days are the most common symptom of symptomatic uterine fibroids, in particular submucosal and intramural fibroids in contact with the uterine cavity.

Fibroids, a frequent cause of heavy periods

Very heavy periods (menorrhagia), with or without clots, lasting more than 7 days, are the most common symptom of symptomatic uterine fibroids, in particular submucosal and intramural fibroids.

The risk of anaemia

Heavy and repeated periods can lead to iron-deficiency anaemia, resulting in marked fatigue, pallor and breathlessness on exertion. A blood test can detect it.

When to consult?

Periods requiring a change of protection every 1 to 2 hours, large clots, or signs of anaemia justify a consultation to look for a fibroid or another cause of gynaecological bleeding.

Frequently asked questions

Do all fibroids cause heavy periods?
No. About 50 to 70% of fibroids are asymptomatic. Submucosal fibroids are the most frequent cause of heavy bleeding.
How can heavy periods due to a fibroid be treated?
Uterine artery embolization treats all the fibroids in a single session, without surgery, with improvement of bleeding in the majority of cases.
